Reeling in Fun: Family Fishing Derby set for April 6

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Get your fishing poles and your bait ready because the Family Fishing Derby is coming to Family Park on April 6 from 9-11 a.m.

This free event will offer outdoor fun for the entire family.

Tiger Woods once said “I thoroughly enjoy getting away from the game and going out fishing because it’s so relaxing, so quiet and peaceful. I mean, there’s no noise other than nature – and it’s so different from what I do in a tournament situation that it just eases my mind.”

According to research, there’s something to that.

Research has found that exposure to outdoor activities like fishing promotes attention restoration, memory, competence, supportive social groups, and self-discipline. It also moderates stress, improves behaviors and symptoms of ADHD and was even associated with higher standardized test scores for children.

Fishing also fosters a range of valuable skills. It instills discipline by ensuring focus and adherence to fishing techniques. It builds resilience, enabling individuals to persevere despite challenges.

An outdoor activity like fishing also enhances problem-solving skills because it requires adaptation to changing conditions. Persistence is also developed, as it encourages continued effort to achieve desired outcomes.

Lastly, fishing can improve hand-eye coordination by enhancing accuracy in casting and reeling in fish. Thus, fishing is not just a recreational activity, but also a platform for personal development.

Families are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment and bait, as well as ensure that participants over 16 years old possess a valid Arkansas Fishing license. The event aims to provide resources and ideas for safe, affordable activities for families to enjoy together.

Attendees will enjoy musical entertainment provided by DJ Courier Coleman while participating in various activities aimed at promoting family bonding and community connection. From the family fishing derby to games, door prizes, and local vendor booths, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
